The meaning of “fifth wheel” in the 1950s
Admit it. You’ve always wondered why a trailer with two or four wheels of its own is called a “fifth wheel”, right? Still, we know what it means. It’s an RV travel trailer that is towed from the bed of a pickup truck or a truck tractor, allowing for more driving stability and interior space. But there was a time when the term “fifth wheel” was relatively unheard of and much more literal.

RV sleeps four. Tow vehicle gets 20 miles per gallon
How about this — a fifth wheel travel trailer that can be pulled by a VW bug that can cruise down the highway at about 20 miles per gallon of gas! And get this: It can turn 360 degrees! Ever seen one of these recreational vehicles on the road? We wonder why this never caught on. Maybe now’s the time!
Remove your receiver hitch when not towing to prevent whiplash
Roughly 40 percent of vehicles on the highway have a receiver hitch (sometimes referred to as a trailer hitch). Many times when a vehicle is finished towing, the ball mount is not removed from the hitch. The result is in a collision from the rear there’s a 22 percent increased chance of a whiplash injury to passengers. Learn more in this one minute video.
